spirit of summer art exhibition

free entry, 27 May - 8 june

Six hugely talented local artists are coming together to stage a joint exhibition of their work called ‘Spirit of Summer’. Not to be missed.

Sarah Sands: ‘The Coast’ is Sarah’s sanctuary and a source of inspiration clearly evident in her painting. With a recognisable domestic quality, they evoke feelings of nostalgia for days spent by the sea. Fusing media memory, she achieves a distinctive dreamlike quality.

Lynne Watkins: Lynne enjoys using traditional silversmithing techniques to produce her work. Recycled metals and materials are transformed into jewellery which is inspired by Hertfordshire wildlife and geological forms.

Jackie Uphill: Jackie produces diverse contemporary textile and mixed media pieces, predominantly based on her love of fantasy and science fiction. She wants to share her quirky version of the world and to invoke in viewers, a sense of strangeness and wonder.

Gill Woods: Gill’s expressive paintings capture the fractured light and changing qualities of the natural landscape. She is drawn, in a very personal way, to Hertfordshire’s ancient woodland, the familiarity of coastal landscapes and the tranquillity of the Scottish borders.

Eleanor Sidaway: Local artist Eleanor is currently working with textiles to create 2D work inspired by nature and colour. She uses layers of fabric, machine and hand embroidery to depict trees, leaves, flowers and hedgerows.

Barbara Burrows: Barbara uses both old family photographs and more recent images to depict colourful, often timeless, memorable moments. She paints with acrylics and oils.

Make and Take Days: 31 May & 7 June, 10.30am-2pm

The artists are also staging a couple of Make and Take Days when you can explore your creativity with summer themed art experiences: stitching, batik, instant jewellery, brusho, pebble painting and inks. No need to book in advance. £3 per make.

creative canvas challenge

Time to get creative and support the Hub - by creating your very own canvas art work to put on show. You may even get it sold.

Our Creative Canvas Challenge invites all artists - no matter your level or style - to use the same sized canvas to create an original piece of art. It'll then be part of an exhibition open to the public, where people can buy what they see.

You can get your canvas and registration form from Elvira's Coffee Shop at the Henderson Hub (£2.50, max 2 per artist).

You then need to hand in your artwork on 16 June between 10am-12noon.

The exhibition and sale will run from 19-29 June and form part of the Abbots Langley Festival..
